Exploring the Magic of Galicia, Spain: Food, History, and Timeless Beauty

If you’re dreaming of a destination that blends rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and a food scene that rivals anywhere in Europe, Galicia, in the northwest corner of Spain, should be at the top of your list. I recently had the opportunity to explore this lush and authentic region, and I’m still thinking about the flavors, views, and unforgettable moments.


Santiago de Compostela: A City of Pilgrimage and Peace

Our home base was the iconic city of Santiago de Compostela, famous as the final stop on the Camino de Santiago (St. James Way). Even if you’re not walking the entire pilgrimage, just being in this city feels deeply meaningful. The cathedral—a stunning blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture—sits at the heart of the city and welcomes pilgrims from around the world. There’s something powerful about watching people arrive after weeks on foot, often emotional and exhausted, but proud.


The Camino Spirit

The Camino is more than just a route—it’s a journey of reflection, connection, and discovery. While we didn’t hike it ourselves, we spoke with several pilgrims who had walked for hundreds of kilometers. Their stories added depth to our experience, and the shared sense of purpose among travelers in the city is incredibly moving.



Indulging in Northern Spain’s Food Scene

Galicia is an absolute paradise for food lovers. The region’s cuisine is all about fresh, local ingredients—especially seafood, which is some of the best in Europe. From tender octopus (pulpo a la gallega) to razor clams and scallops fresh from the coast, every dish celebrates the ocean. Not to worry if you aren't a seafood lover, there are other options.

We also had the chance to dine at Michelin-starred restaurants, where tradition meets innovation on the plate. Each meal was a work of art—thoughtfully prepared, beautifully plated, and paired with incredible local wines. Spain sure does like to make sure you don't go hungry. A typical meal was a few appetizers, and two meats for dinner, usually a beef and a seafood.



Wine Country and River Cruising Through the Vineyards

Speaking of wine, northern Spain is home to some of the most underrated wine regions, and Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra is one of its best-kept secrets. We explored this breathtaking area known for its steep, terraced vineyards that hug the dramatic canyons of the Sil River.


One of the highlights was a river cruise through the vineyards—gliding between towering cliffs with rows of vines rising above us on both sides. The views at Bodegas Regina Viarum were surreal, and tasting local Albariño and Mencía wines while learning about centuries-old winemaking traditions made it even more special.



Manor Houses, Gardens, and Timeless Elegance

Beyond the cities and vineyards, we visited several of Galicia’s elegant manor houses and gardens. Many of these estates have been meticulously preserved, showcasing traditional Galician architecture and lush, sculpted grounds that feel like something out of a fairytale. The peaceful surroundings and historic details made each visit feel like stepping into another era. I could have spent hours at the Palacio de Oca, its grounds were unlike anything I have ever seen before. 



Staying at Parador Hotels

To round out the experience, we stayed in Parador hotels—luxurious accommodations often set within restored castles, monasteries, and palaces. These unique stays combine comfort with a sense of history, offering a one-of-a-kind way to immerse yourself in Spain’s cultural heritage. From secluded accommodations to beachside towns, Spain has more than 50 Parador hotels around the country. 



Final Thoughts


Galicia offers the best of Spain—without the crowds. From the soul-stirring energy of Santiago de Compostela and the culinary treasures of the north, to the serene vineyards and historic stays, this region is truly unforgettable. Whether you’re seeking food, history, nature, or connection, Galicia delivers it all—with heart.
